It’s a Tuesday afternoon, the kind of day where the light comes in at an angle that makes everything look slightly softer than it should. Alex Mirzoyan sits across from me, one hand wrapped around a cup of coffee he’s barely touched. He’s relaxed genuinely so but there’s something else there too. A kind of quiet intensity. The kind you recognize in people who’ve spent thousands of hours listening. Not just to music, but to the world. To the spaces between things.

He’s a cello player. Not just technically, but philosophically. And after spending an hour with him, it becomes clear that his instrument isn’t merely what he plays; it’s how he understands the world, how he builds relationships, and how he believes change happens.

Alex was the boy who chose depth.

Alex was the kind of child who didn’t follow the obvious path. While other young musicians gravitated toward the glamorous instruments, he chose the cello. It’s a choice that seems almost inevitable in retrospect, but at the time, it was distinctly countercultural.

“I was young when I picked up the bass,” Alex recalls, his eyes brightening with the memory. “Most kids want the flashy stuff—the lead guitar, the drums. Those instruments demand attention. But something about the bass spoke to me. That deep, rich sound. It was like discovering you could build foundations with music.”

He graduated from the Chaikovski School, one of Armenia’s most prestigious music institutions. But even as he was mastering classical technique, something deeper was happening. Something that the Chaikovski School couldn’t teach, couldn’t measure, couldn’t put on a report card.

He was becoming aware of his own voice. Not metaphorically but literally. He’d practice for hours, running scales, perfecting his fingering, studying the compositions of the masters. And somewhere in the middle of all that technical work, he’d feel something shift. A moment where the mechanics would fall away and he’d just… play. Not perform. Not execute. Play.

Growing up in Yerevan, music wasn’t a hobby for Alex. It was a necessity. From childhood, he found in it what many people spend their entire lives searching for: a voice when words failed them. A way to communicate what couldn’t be spoken.

“I realize now that I was using music to understand myself,” he explains, his tone thoughtful. “It wasn’t about being technically correct or impressing anyone. It was about having a voice when you didn’t have the words. Music gave me permission to feel things and express things that weren’t acceptable or possible in other ways.”

His first music teacher recognized something in young Alex that went beyond talent. She understood that he wasn’t just learning to play an instrument he was learning to live.

” The teacher wasn’t just teaching me fingering techniques or music theory,” Alex says with genuine warmth and was showing me that music is emotion, thought, and storytelling rolled into one. The teacher taught me that the technical aspects matter, yes, but only insofar as they serve the meaning beneath them.”

That lesson that music matters because it means something which has stayed with him for decades. It’s become the lens through which he views not just his own artistry, but his entire approach to creative work and community building.

“A lot of music teachers focus on getting the notes right,” he reflects. “But my teacher understood that getting the notes right without understanding the why behind them is just noise. She taught me that every note carries intention, every phrase tells a story, and every performance is a conversation between the musician and the listener.”

Alex didn’t stumble into formal education by accident. After the Chaikovski School, he pursued classical music training seriously, building the kind of disciplined, systematic understanding of music that only comes from years of rigorous, structured work. Classical music gave him a skeleton to build on a framework that would support everything else he would later explore.

But here’s where his philosophy becomes genuinely interesting: he never let that skeleton become a cage.

“A lot of musicians get stuck in the classical world,” he observes thoughtfully. “They learn the rules so meticulously, so completely, that they forget there are other languages to speak. For me, formal education was absolutely essential. It was the foundation. But it was just the beginning.”

While other classical musicians were perfecting their craft within traditional boundaries, Alex was listening to rock. Contemporary music. Experimental sounds. He was asking himself a question that many formally truned musicians never ask: What can I learn here that my teacher didn’t teach me?

“I think that’s where real growth happens,” he says with conviction. “When you stop thinking of genres as boxes and start thinking of them as conversations. Classical music teaches you structure and discipline. It teaches you to respect tradition and understand the mathematical beauty of composition. Rock teaches you freedom and raw energy. It teaches you that rules can be broken if the emotion demands it. Why choose? Why not learn from both?”

This philosophy has become central to who he is as an artist and as a bassist for The Beautified Project, his rock band. It’s a genuine fusion classical precision meeting rock’s refusal to be contained. You hear it in every note: the discipline of someone trained in the classical tradition, the freedom of someone who refused to be limited by it.

Somewhere along the way, Alex’s world expanded dramatically beyond just playing music. He began organizing festivals, developing cultural initiatives, managing creative projects. On the surface, these pursuits might seem separate from his music career a bassist who dabbles in arts administration on the side. But that’s missing the point entirely.

“I started realizing that music was just one tool in a much larger toolkit,” he explains, leaning forward slightly. “Literature, photography, community programs, they all do the same thing. Creates space for people to connect, to think differently, to understand each other better. Take down the walls we build around ourselves.”

This is where his passion becomes almost tangible. You can see it in the way he shifts forward in his chair, in how his voice changes from reflective to animated, in the intensity of his gaze.

“When I look at the world right now, what I’m drawn to are people and ideas that create meaning,” he says. “Not just for themselves, but for everyone around them. That’s what truly inspires me. Not fame or recognition”.I’ve never been motivated by that. But impact. The ability to change how someone thinks or feels. To open a door in their mind that they didn’t know existed.”

His work in festivals and public initiatives isn’t a side hustle or a way to supplement his income. It’s a direct extension of his belief that culture can reshape communities. Music, literature, visual art they’re all languages for the conversation he’s trying to start. They’re all tools for building bridges between people who might otherwise never understand each other.

There’s something deeply poetic about listening to a bassist describe his philosophy of life and art. Bass is, by definition, the instrument that holds things together. It’s not flashy. It doesn’t demand attention. It doesn’t play the melody that people hum on their way home. But remove it, and the entire structure collapses. Everything that makes the music beautiful falls apart without the foundation the bass provides.

“I think that’s what drew me to the bass in the first place, even if I didn’t understand it then,” Alex reflects quietly. “The bass doesn’t need to be heard to be essential. It holds things. It creates the foundation that lets everything else exist. There’s a certain beauty in being the voice that makes other voices possible.”

This might be the clearest window into how he approaches life and art. He’s not trying to be the loudest voice in the room. He’s not seeking the spotlight or trying to be remembered as the star. He’s trying to be the voice that makes other voices possible. He’s trying to be the foundation upon which something larger and more beautiful can be built.

It’s a philosophy that extends far beyond music. In his community work, in his festivals, in his creative projects everywhere he goes, he’s asking the same question: How can I create the conditions for something beautiful to happen?

As we wrap up our conversation, the afternoon light is shifting across the coffee shop table. I ask him about the future, what he’s working toward, what vision drives him.

“I want to keep creating spaces where art matters,” he says simply, but with absolute conviction. “Where music, culture, and community intersect. I want to keep learning, keep refusing to be limited by what I already know. And I want to keep finding people who believe that art can change things.”

He pauses, considering his words carefully.

“Because it can,” he continues. “It absolutely can. I’ve seen it happen. I’ve felt it. I’ve watched a single song transform how someone understands themselves. I’ve seen a community festival bring people together who didn’t know they needed each other. And I think that’s worth dedicating your life to. I think that matters more than almost anything else.”

There’s no bravado in how he says this. No grandiosity. Just a quiet certainty the kind that comes from having lived something, from having witnessed art’s power firsthand.

As I leave the coffee shop and step back into the Yerevan afternoon, I can almost hear the cello line as a fellow Chaikovski graduate who deeply understands sound and music. Not flashy. Not demanding. But absolutely essential. Holding everything up. Creating the space that lets the rest of the music exist.

That seems to be exactly what Alex Mirzoyan is doing with his life. He’s not trying to be heard. He’s trying to be the foundation. And in a world that often celebrates the loudest voices, that quiet, essential work might be the most important of all. We at Armvault wish him a future where people feel his music in their bones. Where they walk out of a room changed, carrying something they didn’t have before. Where a single note from his cello reaches someone on their worst day and reminds them they’re not alone.

We wish him audiences that need what he’s doing. Not people looking for a good show, but people searching for their own voice in the sound. People who leave transformed, who carry the resonance of his playing inside them long after it’s over.

He understands what most musicians miss, and that is, music isn’t there to impress you or entertain you. It’s there because sometimes words aren’t enough. Sometimes you need a sound so deep, so honest, that it bypasses all the noise in your head and lands directly in your chest. That’s where Alex lives as a musician.

When he plays, you feel seen. Not in a spotlight way. In the way where someone across a dark room looks at you and nods, and you know they understand. You know you’re not alone in whatever you’re carrying.

That’s what his cello does. It says the things he can’t say with words. It says: I know. I’m here. You matter. It says: We survive this together.

The coffee shop in Yerevan smells like strong espresso and wet stone from the street outside.
