Born and raised in Armenia, Sargsyan never had to go looking for music, it found him before he could walk. His father had played. His mother played. His granddad played ball. \u201cI got the musical genes from them,\u201d he adds simply, but there is a heft in those words. The expectation was not placed, it was unavoidable. In Armenian families this form of inheritance has a different connotation than genetic predisposition. It is watching your elders put their souls into instruments night after night. It is knowing, without being told, that music is your family\u2019s way of talking to the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
First was the dhol, that deep, resonant drum that appears to beat with the very heartbeat of the Caucasus itself. Sargsyan selected percussion not by chance, but by instinct. He wanted his fingers on something vibrating, something that could shake the ground. Then came the santur, that antique stringed instrument that takes patience, precision and a kind of contemplative concentration that most young people never learn. Two instruments, each with its own demands. Two languages must be learned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sargsyan took the traditional road, but thoroughly, unlike many musicians who piece together their education from street tutors and YouTube videos. He studied for years at the 7 Year Music School of National Instruments. Then he went to the Department of Instrumental Performance of the Faculty of Culture of Yerevan State Pedagogical University. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
This was not a crash course. This was the kind of teaching that embeds your muscle memory into your bones, that teaches you not just how to play but why. It immersed him in the folk traditions and national genres of Armenia more deeply than casual learners ever do. His professors were not merely telling him where to place his fingers, they were imparting centuries of accrued expertise on how to make wood and metal sing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The hours piled up, thousands of them, in practice rooms and concert halls, repeating passages until his hands understood them better than his mind. This is the bit that doesn\u2019t look good in pictures, that doesn\u2019t make great social media fodder. This is simply work. Important work. Done patiently, unglamorously. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
When Sargsyan talks about his influences, he doesn\u2019t fire off a litany of foreign superstars. He refers to the tar player Artem Khachatur, the duduk player Gevorg Dabaghyan and the anonymous masters of folk traditions, whom he studied diligently. These weren\u2019t artists he streamed late at night on platforms, these were folks whose work he absorbed, examined and digested until their techniques became part of his own musical gene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The collaborations that ensued were not chance accidents. They came from a musician who had done the work, who could hold his own beside the State Symphony Orchestra of Armenia, who knew what other serious artists were searching for: commitment, preparation, respect for the trade. Playing with the Ethno Colors ensemble, swapping stories with musicians from diverse countries these were not resume building activities. They were true artistic conversations among people who shared an obsession to get it right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There is something almost old-fashioned about this technique. In an era when collaboration is more likely than not simply a featured artist on a streaming track, Sargsyan believes in something deeper like sharing a stage with musicians who push you, who don\u2019t settle for mediocrity, who expect greatness because their reputation is on the line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When asked what he likes most about live performances, Sargsyan doesn\u2019t say applause or sold out stadiums. He says without hesitation: “Playing with professional musicians.” There\u2019s a defiance to that answer, an unwillingness to buy into the notion that any of this matters without quality around you. You\u2019re only as excellent as the individuals you\u2019re standing next to on stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When asked to name his favorite composition, Sargsyan refuses to pick one. \u201cI have lots of arrangements but I can\u2019t just pick one because every one is a different color.\u201d It is the answer of one who does not see art as a hit-making operation, who knows that each piece of work has its own integrity and meaning. Not everything has to be the best thing you ever did. Good is sometimes enough because it\u2019s true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This attitude that the work itself should be valued, not the commercial potential of the piece, looks nearly new in 2026. But it’s really ancient. That is what musicians have always thought when not desperate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But Sargsyan is still restless, despite his triumphs. He dreams of crossing genres, of going into area he has not yet charted, of playing alongside both Armenian and foreign prominent musicians. At an age when many musicians coast on past glories, he\u2019s still hungry for it. Still willing to do the work<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His counsel to budding musicians is a balm in the clamor of our distracted times, “Work tirelessly to achieve your goals and dreams.” Not the instagram version of hustle where all is recorded and done. The actual deal. The kind of labor that happens in soundproofed rooms, where no one is watching, where you fail and fail and fail until you succeed once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He\u2019s not saying it\u2019s going to be easy. He\u2019s not offering viral moments, record deals. He\u2019s saying: be there. Put in the effort. Honor the tradition you\u2019re inheriting. Keep company with men who are better than you are. Stay hungry. Keep on studying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Styopa Sargsyan is a musician of another epoch, not of age, but of values. He believes in the importance of tradition. He thinks it takes time to master something. \u201cYou become better at working with your peers,\u201d he says. He believes the job itself is the point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a day preoccupied with viral moments and sudden success, there\u2019s something nearly revolutionary about a man who just shows up every day, grabs his instruments, and works at greatness as if his life depended on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Maybe it does. Maybe that’s what it all comes down to, the determination to labor in obscurity, to get better for the purpose of getting better, to honor those who came before you by refusing to dishonor their legacy with shortcuts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The dhol still hangs in his studio. The santur waits. Still. And Styopa Sargsyan, who never had to look for music since it was always there, continues to work.
